Debate team members qualify for national competition

Over the weekend of Feb. 12, five members of the Debate Team won a tournament at Marist Preparatory that qualified them for the Grand National competition in Baltimore, Maryland over Memorial Day weekend.

The usually succesful  members who won a qualification are sophomore Stallian Cagle in Declamation, senior Kyle Constable in Extemporaneous Speaking, junior Hugh Slaton and junior Alan Un in Duo Interpretation, and junior Cy Lamb in Congressional Debate.

Over the weekend of Feb. 26, Debate Team was the only team to win the Congressional Debate sweepstakes. Several students received bids to the NFL National Speech and Debate Tournament in Indianapolis, IN.

Senior Kyle Constable won a bid for placing first in United States Extemporaneous Speaking and winning a bid as the first alternate in the  House Chamber of Congressional Debate. Juniors Hugh Slaton and Alan Un earned a first place bid in Duo Interpretation; Slaton also earned a bid in Dramatic Interpretation and Un earned a bid as the third alternate for United States Extemporaneous Speaking.

Junior Shivani Patel won a second place bid in Senate Chamber of Congressional Debate. Sophomore Stallian Cagle won a bid as the first alternate in Humorous Interpretation. Junior Phillips Bagley earned a place as the third alternate in Original Oratory.
